Feeling a bit lost in the woods of midlife, wondering which way to turn for guidance?
Many navigating these significant transitions find themselves wondering the same thing. They’re asking questions like “Who am I now that I no longer have kids in the house?”, “What do I do now that I no longer am in that job?”, or “How do I move forward in life now that I have this physical limitation?” And these questions lead to questions about "What kind of support do I even need?" and “Where do I find it?”
Believe me, I understand. Seeking clarity and direction is the natural first step, whether you're facing a career shift, navigating relationship changes, processing a loss, or simply feeling that inner nudge for something more. You need to better understand where you currently are, and you desperately want some guidance on what your next best step is.
You might have heard about coaching, therapy, mentoring, or even consulting, and the lines can easily blur. It can feel overwhelming trying to figure out which path will truly help you rediscover your footing and move forward with purpose and joy.
That's why I've put together this post.

By the time you’re done reading it, you'll gain a clear understanding of the fundamental differences between coaching and other supportive roles. You will be able to confidently identify the type of guidance that best aligns with your current needs and aspirations, helping you take that crucial next step towards a more fulfilling future. Think of this as your compass for navigating the landscape of personal growth support.
In my work with individuals like you – those in the midst of powerful midlife transitions – I often hear the same questions. " What exactly is life coaching? Is it like therapy? Do you just tell me what to do like a personal trainer?" What people really want to know is “How exactly are you going to help me?” That's a vital piece of information and it’s essential to clear up any confusion you might have. Choosing the right kind of support is a pivotal step towards you reclaiming your identity, reigniting your purpose, and rediscovering joy.
I've seen, and experienced, firsthand the transformative power of coaching when it's the right fit, and I want to help you determine if that's the case for you.
Life Coaching vs. Therapy:
Focusing on Your Future Path
One of the most common areas of confusion revolves around the differences between coaching and therapy. While both are invaluable resources for personal growth, their approaches and focuses differ significantly.
Imagine standing at a crossroads. Therapy often helps you understand how you got to that intersection by exploring your past. Coaching, on the other hand, focuses on helping you decide which path to take next and how to get there.
Think of therapy as a process of healing and understanding. It often involves exploring past experiences, processing emotions, and addressing mental health concerns. I deeply respect the vital role therapy plays in helping individuals overcome significant emotional wounds. My own therapeutic experiences and my background in psychology have given me a profound appreciation for this work.

It's about looking forward, setting powerful goals, and developing actionable strategies to achieve them.
It's about tapping into your potential and creating the future you desire.
For someone in midlife navigating a major transition – perhaps the grief of an empty nest or the uncertainty of a career change – coaching provides a framework for envisioning what comes next and building the steps to get there. It's not about dwelling on the "why" of the transition (though those feelings are valid and acknowledged), but about the "how" of moving forward with renewed purpose.
Coaching empowers you to:
define your vision for the future,
identify your resources and strengths you already possess,
and overcome obstacles that might be holding you back.
Coaching is an active partnership focused on forward momentum and creating lasting change.
Life Coaching vs. Mentoring & Consulting:
You Are the Expert
Ever felt like you needed someone to just tell you what to do? While tempting, true and lasting growth often comes from within. This is where the distinction between coaching and mentoring or consulting becomes clear.

It's easy to think of coaching as simply getting advice from someone who's "been there." However, the core of coaching lies in empowering you to find your own answers and take ownership of your journey.
Mentors often share their personal experiences and offer guidance based on their own paths. While I may share relevant experiences from my own midlife journey – perhaps illustrating how I navigated a change or rediscovered a passion – it's always to offer examples and possibilities, not to prescribe a specific course of action for you.
You are the ultimate expert on your own life, who you are, and what you want.
Similarly, consultants typically bring their own expertise and solutions to the table. In coaching, I have no pre-set agenda other than to help you define and achieve your unique goals.
For someone in midlife feeling lost or unsure of their next steps, the coaching process provides a structured space for self-discovery. It's about uncovering your own inner wisdom, clarifying your values, and aligning your actions with what truly matters to you.
Coaching is a collaborative partnership.
You're not passively receiving advice;
you're actively shaping your future.
I bring expertise in the process of change, asking powerful questions, and providing frameworks for growth.
You bring the expertise on you.
Together, we unlock your potential and create a roadmap for your success.
Life Coaching vs. Sports Coaching & Friendship:
Setting Realistic Expectations and Boundaries
Think of a sports coach pushing their team to victory. While there are parallels in guidance and support, life coaching operates in a fundamentally different arena.
It's important to understand that life coaching isn't about competition or "winning" in a traditional sense. It's a deeply personal journey focused on your individual growth and fulfillment.
While I might incorporate elements of sports coaching by providing you with information, demonstrating tools, and empowering you to practice and implement them, the focus is always on your personal best.

Life coaching is about helping you bring out your strengths and overcome your challenges, not about comparing you to others.
Similarly, while I strive to create a warm and supportive environment, coaching is distinct from friendship. Friends often offer advice based on their personal opinions and emotional involvement. As your coach, I provide an objective and non-judgmental space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and goals without the influence of personal biases.
For someone in midlife who might be feeling the pressure of societal expectations or comparing themselves to others, coaching offers a space to focus solely on their own unique journey and aspirations.
It's about setting realistic expectations,
understanding what coaching can and cannot do,
and building a foundation of self-acceptance and growth.
Coaching is about creating realistic outcomes and timelines tailored to your individual circumstances. It's about helping you identify and overcome your fears and objections, empowering you to take meaningful action towards your goals.
My Coaching Style:
How I Walk Your Path with You
My approach to coaching isn't just based on theory; it's rooted in personal experience and a deep understanding of the midlife journey. I've been there, and that's why I'm here.
When you work with me, you're not just getting a coach;

you're partnering with someone who has navigated the often-challenging terrain of midlife transitions herself.
I know the hollow ache of loss, the fear that accompanies significant change, and the feeling of disorientation when life as you know it shifts. I experienced a whirlwind of midlife transitions myself – a career change, children leaving home, the loss of my mother, and my husband's military retirement all within a single year. It felt like my very identity was being pulled apart. It was this intense personal experience that ignited my passion to guide others through similar challenges.
Driven by a lifelong fascination with human behavior, a pursuit I've been dedicated to since the age of 16, I delved deep into the science of personal transformation. I became a certified Life Transitions Coach and a Master Practitioner of the Energetic Leadership Index (ELI-MP). My studies in behavioral psychology, positive psychology, and change behavior therapy, combined with the unique insights from the ELI-MP, equip me with a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate change effectively.
Because I've walked this path, I meet you where you are with genuine empathy and a safe, supportive space. I understand your struggles not just intellectually, but emotionally. I'm not here to offer quick fixes, but to empower you to honor your present circumstances and then focus forward with clarity and intention.
My goal is simple:
to empower you to build the life you truly want, with you as your own greatest advocate.
My coaching approach involves providing you with standardized educational materials, practical tools, and valuable resources. However, the journey we take together is deeply personalized because it's driven by your unique experiences, perspectives, and goals.
Think of it this way: everyone starts their journey from a different location. I meet you on your path, wherever you may be, and walk alongside you. You are always in control of the direction we take. I'm there to offer suggestions, illuminate your options, and accompany you as you move forward, empowering you to rewrite your story and create a fulfilling future.
It truly is possible – I've done it, and I've helped others do it too.
My mission is to prevent midlife from becoming a crisis by empowering you to thrive, with resources and programs that are born from a deep desire to make support accessible and adaptable, no matter where you are on your journey.
Navigating Your Path with Clarity

- Therapy often looks back to heal; coaching looks forward to build.
- Mentoring shares experiences; coaching empowers you to find your own answers.
- Sports coaching focuses on external performance; life coaching focuses on your inner growth.
- And while friendship offers support, coaching provides an objective and structured partnership for change.
My aim in sharing these insights is to empower you with clarity. Understanding these differences is the first step towards choosing the right kind of support to help you rediscover your identity, purpose, and joy during this transformative time.
You have the strength and resilience within you to navigate these changes and create a fulfilling future.
Sometimes, having a dedicated guide by your side can make all the difference. Take the time to consider what kind of support truly resonates with your needs and aspirations. You deserve to thrive.
